Checking a Forex Dealer for U.S. Customers: A Registration and Identity Worksheet
Before depositing with a forex provider, verify the exact entity and the rules that apply to the offered product.
Before depositing with a forex provider, verify the exact entity and the rules that apply to the offered product. A familiar platform name or polished website is not enough. Registration checks, identity verification, disclosure review and payment-destination checks work together. None guarantees profitability or eliminates fraud, but skipping them leaves a customer vulnerable to both unauthorized businesses and impersonators borrowing a genuine firm's identity.
Identify the legal entity behind the brand
Read the agreement for the company name, jurisdiction, address and the entity that will hold the account. A group can operate several subsidiaries under one brand, with different authorizations and customer protections. A website accepting a U.S. address does not prove that the relevant activity is authorized for U.S. retail customers. Record the entity before searching official records. If the provider will not clearly identify the contracting company, that uncertainty should be resolved before sharing sensitive information or sending funds.
Use official regulatory tools
For the relevant U.S. futures and retail forex context, the CFTC directs customers to registration checks and NFA's BASIC system. Match the legal name and registration category, not merely a similar spelling. Review the status and dates. A record for a different type of activity does not automatically authorize every service a company markets. Read official explanations of the categories or ask the regulator when the distinction is unclear. A screenshot provided by a salesperson is not a substitute for opening the official record yourself.
Review people and disciplinary information
The firm's record is one part of the background check. Relevant principals or associated persons can have histories that deserve review. A lack of listed disciplinary history does not guarantee future conduct, while an entry should be read in its actual context rather than summarized inaccurately. Distinguish allegations, findings and the status of proceedings. Preserve the record and date consulted. A provider's marketing summary of its regulatory standing should be checked against the underlying official information.
