A Forex Research Journal: Measure Complete Results Instead of Collecting Winning Screenshots

A trading journal is useful only if it records the full process and results.

A trading journal is useful only if it records the full process and results. A collection of winning screenshots can omit losses, costs, deposits and changes in the rules. For research, the goal is a reproducible record that separates a hypothesis from an outcome. This guide explains what to document; it does not imply that journaling creates profitability or that a reader should trade a leveraged product.

Record the plan before observing the result

Write the instrument, direction, units, entry assumption, intended holding period and the reason for the exercise. Identify what evidence would contradict the hypothesis. If the rules change, date the change rather than rewriting the old plan to fit the outcome. This protects against hindsight bias. A paper exercise and a live position should be labeled separately. The same discipline applies to an economic forecast: a prediction recorded after the event cannot be evaluated as though it was made beforehand.

Capture actual executions and costs

Keep confirmations and account statements, including entry and exit prices, size, commissions, spread treatment, financing and currency conversion. A gross price move is not the same as net account profit. Partial fills and multiple exits need consistent accounting. If a platform reports a result differently from the worksheet, investigate the definition rather than selecting the more flattering number. Preserve both the raw record and the calculation method so that another reader could reproduce the result under the same assumptions.

Separate performance from cash contributions

Deposits increase an account balance without being trading gains, while withdrawals reduce it without necessarily being losses. A simple ending-balance comparison can therefore misrepresent performance. Record cash flows and their timing. Different return calculations answer different questions, especially when capital changes during the period. State the method instead of announcing a percentage without a denominator. An account that doubles after a large deposit has not necessarily earned a 100% trading return. This basic distinction is essential when evaluating promotional claims.
