Forex Leverage and Margin: Why the Deposit Is Not the Size of the Risk

Margin is money required to support a leveraged position.

Liquidation can occur under the agreement

When account conditions breach the relevant thresholds, a provider may close positions according to its policies and legal obligations. A margin call is not always a promise that the customer will have a long period to add money. Read the agreement and liquidation procedures, including how positions may be selected and how market conditions affect execution. A forced close can realize a loss at an unfavorable price. The existence of an automated risk system protects neither the strategy's thesis nor a desired execution level.

Several positions can share one risk

An account holding multiple pairs may appear diversified while carrying a similar directional exposure to the dollar or another common factor. A broad currency move can therefore affect several positions at once. Margin treatment may recognize some offsets, but an offset in a platform calculation is not the same as eliminating economic risk. Check the combined notional and scenario sensitivity. A position-by-position view can understate the effect of a shared shock, particularly when correlations change during stressed market conditions.

Rules and protections depend on the product

U.S. OTC retail forex, exchange-traded futures and offshore products should not be treated as the same legal arrangement. Applicable margin requirements and customer protections differ. Verify current rules and the exact legal entity through official regulatory sources. A provider advertising leverage beyond the relevant U.S. limits deserves careful scrutiny; changing the website's language or accepting U.S. dollars does not establish U.S. authorization. Registration itself is not a guarantee of profitability, and legal access does not make a highly leveraged exposure suitable for every customer.

Evaluate whether participation is appropriate at all

Before considering a position, understand how losses, funding, liquidation and account deficits are handled. Do not use rent money, emergency reserves or borrowed funds on the assumption that a stop order guarantees protection. If the product's exposure cannot be explained without relying on the platform's promotional language, more understanding is needed. This article explains mechanics and risk; it does not provide a leverage recommendation or a trading plan. Choosing not to take a leveraged position is a valid outcome of the analysis.
