Building a U.S. Economic Calendar for Forex Research Without Treating It as a Signal
An economic calendar organizes scheduled information.
Different releases transmit different information
CPI, PCE, payrolls, retail sales and policy statements answer different questions. A stronger activity number can affect growth expectations, interest-rate expectations and risk sentiment at the same time. The net currency response depends on both sides of the pair and broader conditions. A calendar's high-impact label is not a promise of a directional move or even a fixed amount of volatility. Use the label as a research prompt and inspect the actual release, including revisions and category detail.
Execution conditions can change around publication
Spreads can widen, quotes can move quickly and orders can execute differently from a quiet-market example. A chart's first visible move does not guarantee that a customer could transact at that price. Stop orders do not create an absolute loss cap. A research process should record these conditions instead of evaluating only the eventual direction. Choosing to avoid exposure during a release is a legitimate risk decision, not a failure to exploit a supposedly certain opportunity.
A calendar entry should be reproducible
For a hypothetical CPI release, record the agency link, scheduled time, reference month, headline and core definitions, expected values with their source, prior vintage and revision notes. After publication, add the actual figures and a description of the market data source used for any reaction study. Separate the immediate reaction from later movement. If an unrelated event occurred at the same time, note it. Without those details, a claim that a particular release caused a precise currency move may be impossible to reproduce.
Review patterns without overfitting
Collect multiple observations and include events that did not fit the initial hypothesis. A relationship discovered in a small sample can be fragile, and transaction costs can change the economic result. Avoid optimizing a rule until it perfectly explains a few past announcements. Keep a distinction between research, simulation and live results. This calendar framework helps organize evidence; it does not provide trading signals, a forecast service or a reason to risk money that cannot be lost.
