Forex Rollover and Financing: Read the Calendar and the Contract, Not Just the Rate Gap

An overnight forex position can receive or incur financing adjustments depending on the product and provider. These amounts are often described as swap or rollover, but the label does not explain the full calculation. Interest differentials, provider pricing, settlement conventions and holidays can all matter. A strategy designed to collect carry must still face exchange-rate risk and trading costs. Financing income is not a guaranteed return on the margin posted.

Identify the product's holding arrangement

A retail OTC position, a physically converted currency balance and a futures contract do not handle financing identically. The same pair name can appear in all three. Read the agreement for the actual instrument rather than applying an explanation from another market. Find the posting time, relevant account currency and the conditions for holding across the provider's rollover point. A position opened and closed during a calendar day may still cross that point depending on the timezone and schedule used by the platform.

A central-bank rate difference is incomplete

Retail financing can reflect market rates, markups and provider-specific calculations. The result may differ from simply subtracting two policy rates and dividing by the number of days in a year. Rates can change, and a provider's credit and debit treatment may not be symmetric. Ask for the current schedule and calculation convention. A quoted positive amount for one direction does not establish that the opposite direction has an equal negative amount. The account statement, not an informal carry table, determines what was actually posted.

Calendar conventions affect timing

Settlement dates, weekends and holidays can lead to adjustments covering more than one day at a posting time. The exact pattern depends on the pair, instrument and agreement. Do not memorize a universal triple-charge day and assume it applies in every circumstance. Check the provider's holiday notices and the relevant currencies' calendars. A change in the posting amount may reflect the number of financed days rather than a sudden change in the annual rate, so both dimensions should be examined.
